Creating an account and finding your way around.
Muuted has no passwords. Enter your email on app.muuted.com and we send you a sign-in link — tap it, confirm, and you're in. You can also use Continue with Google.
Sign-in links expire after 30 minutes and work once. If one expires, just request a new one. No email in sight? Check your spam folder.
When you first sign in, Muuted walks you through picking a few sources and muting a few words, and finishes with a short three-step tour of the feed. Nothing is locked in — you can add, remove, and change everything later. (Existing accounts see the tour once after big updates, too.)
Your feed lives at app.muuted.com/feed. The menu (top left) slides in your settings and links; Feed controls is the page where everything you've set lives, in four sections: Sources (what comes in — categories live here now), Mutes (what stays out), Always show (your exceptions), and Hidden stories (what got caught). On desktop the menu is a permanent left sidebar.

On Feed controls → Sources, search any topic, site, team, or channel and tap + Add. Or paste a link — Muuted finds the site's feed for you.
Searching an interest — recipes, fact check, product reviews, how to — brings up a hand-picked shortlist of the best sites for it, each one tap to add.

No feed available: TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X / Threads don't offer feeds, so they can't be added. Many creators post the same thing on YouTube or their own site — add that instead.
Paste a site’s address even when it has no visible feed. If Muuted can’t find one, it offers to Build a feed from the page’s own headlines — the result is marked Built. Titles and links only, never full article text; that source then refreshes on the normal schedule like any other.
Many news sites stopped publishing RSS but still publish a news sitemap for search engines. Muuted reads that sitemap directly ahead of the page itself, which is how sites like BBC and Reuters come back with a full page of current stories instead of nothing. No. LinkedIn’s robots.txt blocks automated access for everyone except its own whitelisted crawlers, and it publishes no RSS feed. The full answer covers what to follow instead — the original sources a LinkedIn post is usually about, most of which do publish a feed.
Starter packs add a curated set of sources — Top News, Tech, Sports, Science… — in one tap.
Detox packs are the mute-side twin: a curated set of words that quiets a whole subject (Politics, Spoilers, Doom & Gloom…). Every Detox pack page shows the exact words and the slots they use before you apply, and the pack lands in your settings as its own named list you can pause, edit, or delete.
Discover (on the left rail) has four tabs. Collections is a browsable catalog of hand-picked sources across 22 subjects — open a subject, add sources one at a time or hit Add all. A live counter shows how many source slots you have left as you go, and paywalled sources are labeled so you know before you add.
Trending shows what's loud across the news right now — any trending word is one tap from being muted, if you'd rather not hear about it. Widgets previews each sidebar widget and adds or removes it from your feed in one tap. Learn walks through five core moves, each one linking straight to the real control it describes.

New videos land in your Video lane and in your feed — in order, no recommendations, no autoplay. Shorts are off by default (there's a switch in the menu).
Paste a handle into Add-a-source and Muuted resolves it:
Their posts get a Social lane of their own and show in your main feed. X / Threads don't offer public feeds, so they can't be added.
Every source lives in a category (News, Tech, Gaming…) that becomes a section of your feed. On Feed controls → Sources you can move a source to another category, rename a category, or work on several sources at once — tick their boxes, then move them all to a category or remove them together. Need a category that doesn't exist yet? + New category sits right in the dropdown.
Use categories to keep related sources together; changes show up the next time your feed rebuilds.
The heart of Muuted: what muting does, and how to see and control what it caught.
Type a word or phrase in Mute the noise and any headline containing it is muted. Matching is whole-word and ignores capitalization: muting musk mutes "Musk announces…" but not "muskrat".
You can also mute straight from a headline: tap a word — or a few words in a row to build a phrase — then tap the Mute button that appears. There's an immediate Undo if you change your mind.
Junk filters are ready-made filters Muuted maintains — sponsored posts, coupon roundups, press releases, paywalled stories, and more. Toggle them on Feed controls; anything they catch shows up in Hidden stories with a Caught by: Junk label, so you can always check their work.
Free plans get all the filters for their first week, then a daily count of what the filters would have hidden; the filters themselves are part of Pro. The Paywalled filter checks articles themselves, and paywalled sources are labeled in Discover and search before you add them.
Group related muted words into a named list — Spoilers, March Madness — and control them together. Pause a list and its words stop muting but stay saved (perfect for seasonal topics); resume brings them back; delete frees the slots. Detox packs you apply land as their own list, so you can see, edit, or remove the whole set any time.
Each list shows how many stories it muted this month, so you can tell which of your mutes are doing the work.
Nothing disappears silently. Tap the N muted count in your feed for a quick peek, or open Feed controls → Hidden stories for the full picture: a real feed of everything caught in the last 7 days, as full story cards, each with a Caught by: line saying exactly what caught it — a muted word, a Junk filter, or a topic. You can search the whole log and filter it by rule.
Your rules themselves live in the other sections of Feed controls — Sources, Mutes, and Always show. (The old app.muuted.com/muted link still works; it lands on Hidden stories.)
Never miss a topic you care about. Add words under Feed controls → Always show and any headline mentioning them appears even if it also hits a muted word.
Example: you mute FIFA to skip World Cup noise, but always-show drones because you fly them. A story about drones disrupting World Cup security still reaches you.
Always-show matching is deliberately generous — drone also matches "drones".
Stats shows how many stories were muted for you, the loudest topics you skipped, your most-read categories and sources, time saved, and your reading streak.

Tap the status line at the top of your feed (or open Sort from the menu) to open the Sort sheet — every way of arranging your feed lives there, and the same controls sit on Feed controls → Sort by:
The search bar at the top does everything at once: type anything and it searches your feed, offers matching new sources to add, and shows any muted words that match. Flip the results to Include hidden and it also searches stories your filters caught, each labeled with the reason it was hidden.
Tap anywhere on a card to open its summary; tap the headline and the article opens on the source's own site, in a new tab. Your feed never reloads — close the tab and you are exactly where you left off.
Some stories carry extra facts, and Muuted puts them right on the card:
Stories you scroll past get a slightly lighter headline, so you can tell at a glance what you've already been through. Nothing is hidden or removed — it's just a visual marker, and it's remembered per device.
When new stories have landed above the ones you already saw, a Continue where you left off button appears near the top for a few seconds — tap it to jump straight back to your spot.
Under Sort → Mode (or Feed controls → Sort by) your feed has two extra gears:
Like your feed set up a certain way for mornings and another way for weekends? Save the current setup — view, order, mode, time window, layout — as a named preset from the Sort sheet, then apply it in one tap. Presets follow your account across devices, and applying one is undoable.
Tap a card and Muuted can show a summary of the article. Summaries are AI-generated (and labeled as such), so treat them as a preview, not a quote — the headline always opens the real article.
Every free account gets 10 summaries a month, no card required — the button counts down what's left, and it resets each month. Paid tiers include summaries ongoing.
Any story being discussed on Hacker News wears a comment-count pill. Tap it and the whole thread opens right inside the story's popup — with an Open on Hacker News link if you'd rather read it there. Sources that carry their own discussion link get a Discussion link too.
Not your thing? One toggle in Feed Sort turns it all off.
Done with a story? Swipe it sideways (or use its Mute & more button) and it collapses away, with a brief Undo. Want it later? Mute & more → Save keeps it in your Saved tab.
A saved story stays in Saved until you remove it yourself — mutes, junk filters, and feed refreshes never touch it.
Your feed has a pinned lane strip — My Feed, Video, Social, Podcasts — free on every plan, and a Saved tab that appears once you've saved your first story. Video collects your YouTube and Vimeo channels, Social collects the people you follow from Bluesky or Mastodon, and Podcasts collects your shows. Each has a grouped view (by channel or by person) and a Latest view — and everything still shows in your main feed too.
Podcasts remember where you stopped: an episode you're partway through wears a Resume mark with the timestamp, and picks up right there.
Empty tab? That just means you haven't added that kind of source yet — the tab itself tells you how.
Videos play right inside Muuted using YouTube’s own embedded player — the same one any website uses. That embedded player isn’t signed in to your YouTube account, so YouTube treats it as an anonymous view: you’ll see ads even if you have Premium, and because it’s an in-page player rather than the YouTube app, background play is limited (phone browsers restrict audio from an embedded video once it moves to the background). This is how YouTube’s embed works, not a setting on our side.
Want your Premium perks — no ads and background play? Watch that video in the YouTube app itself, signed in as you. Everything else in Muuted — your feed, muting, and reading — stays exactly as it is.
Big news gets covered everywhere. Combine dupes (in the menu) folds the same story from multiple outlets into one card that shows its coverage — set it to Off, Normal, or Aggressive.
Choose whether your feed shows Last 12h, Last 24h, Last 48h — or everything. Great for a quick morning catch-up.
Text size and Appearance both live in the menu. Appearance switches between Auto, Light, and Dark — Auto follows your device.

While you're reading, a N new stories — tap to update pill may appear at the top. Tap it and the new stories come in without losing your place — you land right back on the story you were reading. Not ready? Dismiss it with the ✕ and keep scrolling.

Manage billing on the dashboard opens your billing portal: switch between monthly and yearly, update your card, or cancel. Canceling keeps Pro active through the period you've already paid for — no lock-in.

Download a backup of my data (bottom of the dashboard) gives you a file with your sources, muted words, and always-show words. Import it into a fresh Muuted account — or take your sources to any reader that speaks OPML.
No ads, no tracking, and your data is never sold. What you follow and what you mute is personal — those are stored encrypted on our servers.

Local-news lookups use the GeoNames postal dataset (CC-BY 4.0).
You can delete your account yourself: in the app's settings, tap Delete my account (next to Download a backup of my data) and type your email address to confirm. Your account and all its data are removed. If you have an active subscription, cancel it first via Manage billing.
Prefer a human? Email support@muuted.com from your account address and we'll handle it. Grab a backup first if you might come back.
Quick fixes for the most common hiccups.
Tap Refresh feed in the menu first. If the app itself seems stuck on an old version, clear the site's stored data once — on iPhone: Settings → Safari → Advanced → Website Data → remove muuted.com — then sign back in. That's a one-time fix.
Muting matches the headline, whole words only. Check the exact headline wording — "GOP" won't be caught by muting republican, and plurals need their own entry. Also check your Always show list: those words deliberately override mutes.
Sites sometimes move or retire their feeds. Remove the source and add it again by searching or pasting its address — Muuted will find the current feed. Still quiet? The site may simply not have published lately.
Check spam and promotions folders, then request a fresh link (they expire after 30 minutes). If it still won't come, email support@muuted.com and we'll get you in.
